GIG Project

The GIG (Gambia Is Good) project, is a unique and highly successful example of Voluntary, Public and Business Sector engagement.  With original support from the DFID's Business Linkage Challenge Fund, Concern Universal and Haygrove, a leading UK horticultural business, are collaborating to create a sustainable, pro-poor marketing initiative in The Gambia that serves the interests of both local people and consumers. Now in its fourth year, GIG is also supported and funded by The Travel Foundation, to increase its impact by way of promoting responsible practices in the tourism industry.

Juffureh Project

Juffureh is a long standing day excursion destination that had attracted many of the negative impacts of tourism and was failing in its potential to contribute to local economic development.  With the support of the Travel Foundation (and a massive personal imput from Adama Bah), Juffureh has made significant progress in identifying a way forward.  This will be an ongoing dynamic process providing plenty of material and issues for consideration by course participants.

PRSP (Paper Recycling Skills Project )

The aim behind the charity was to introduce the traditional skill of papermaking to the country in order to assist a number of students with their supply of paper and books for school use. As the idea becomes better known and understood, the PRSP project will make more inroads once educational institutions recognize its value as a complementary aspect of Gambia’s educational development programme

MBOKA has an expansionist programme across West Africa.

Sandele Eco-Retreat and Learning Centre

Sandele Eco Retreat and Learning Centre is The Gambia’s best example of a tourism public/private sector Responsible Tourism development.  Sandele Eco-Retreat is benefiting local people by the transfer of ecological building skills, training in the tourism industry and by maximising local purchasing and the manufacture of furniture and other goods while at the same time offering an up-market tourist experience.  The Pathways Foundation – a charitable organisation - has been formed at Sandele to run a wide range of on-site courses that promote Responsible Tourism, sustainability and ethical standards.
